Ekushey Boi Mela - Book Fair

Book fairs are organized several times a year in almost all countries of the world. Without books, the life of an educated person thirsty for knowledge is a kind of stagnation. On the other hand, books are the most reliable material in the world in enriching the storehouse of human knowledge.
Mela (Fair) refers to the gathering of many people at the same place at the same time irrespective of caste-religion-caste on a special occasion. From the beginning of social civilization, fairs are a special part of people's traditional social life. In earlier days, fairs were organized especially in villages, but nowadays it is not limited to rural fairs only.
In the modern era, the scope of fairs has gone beyond the normal traditional boundaries and in many cases has attained a special elite level. Recent examples of such fairs include agricultural fairs, art fairs, book fairs, etc. Among these, our special discussion today is the book fair which is perhaps the most favorite festival for book lovers.
The purpose of the book fair is to make people more book lovers, to develop an interest in knowledge through viewing and sharing different kinds of books; Develop affinity with various books. Work-oriented people who usually do not have time to buy books, also rush to the attraction of the fair with their families. Children are introduced to new books through the joy of the fair. This is how education spreads through the joy of the fair.

On 20th December 1972, the first Bangladesh Book Fair was organized at Bangla Academy premises in Dhaka, independent Bangladesh. It is only in these few decades that book fairs have become the life and glory of Bengalis. This new addition to Bengali culture has crossed the country's national boundaries and won international acclaim.

Traditionally held throughout February every year at the Bangla Academy and Suhrawardy Udyan, the fair's 2022 edition started on February 15 after a pandemic-induced delay. Jalal Ahmed, director of the Bangla Academy and member secretary of the Ekushey Book Fair Committee, presented the sales report of this year at the closing ceremony. Book sales plummeted to Tk3.11 crore in 2021 due to the pandemic after the 2020 edition raked in Tk82 crore.
The Ekushey Book Fair 2022 saw the publication of 3,416 new books; 909 - 26 percent of the published ones - were considered "quality publications" by the Bangla Academy.
The academy sold books worth Tk1.27 crore at the fair. Compared to the last fair, Jalal said, 17 percent more sales were generated this time. The published books this year included 1,060 books of poetry, 501 novels and 467 storybooks.The fair was initially slated to end on February 28, but the organisers decided to extend it till March 17 on February 27. Book fair authorities allotted 776 units and 35 pavilions to 534 publishing houses and organisations.
All manners and reforms of the old are not indicative of complete conformity to the new age the fact is recorded in the pages of history. Books teach us to discover the nature of those behaviors as well as their correct application. From the pages of the book, we can learn the fact that various civilizations have fallen to destruction due to the lack of love in the world. Thus books teach us to preserve human values.
The popularity of book fairs is also increasing in our country. Recently, most of the libraries are selecting and buying books from the book fairs. There are government directives for district libraries. Through the financial prosperity of publishing houses.
Moreover, books enlarge the sky of our mind. Good for society. To protect the continuity of civilization, to preserve values and morals, to achieve the liberation of society and the individual, the goal of human life, all kinds of triviality of the individual mind, the narrowness of the individual mind, establishes the elevated and superior thought. Not only that, the influence of the book fair is undeniable in building beautiful social relations with the people of the society.
